John Butcher Award in Numerical Analysis
On the occasion of SciCADE05, five students competed the award. ISC
of SciCADE05, which was acting as the selection committee of the award,
discussed seriously and attained its conclusion that the award should
be given to
Ms. Tatiana T. Marquez Lago from Department of Mathematics and Statistics,
University of New Mexico, USA.
At the beginning of the afternoon session of May 27, John Butcher awarded
the certificate to her together with his originally signatured textbook.

The John Butcher Award in Numerical Analysis is financially supported by
and administrated in New Zealand by ANZIAM (NZ). Anybody who is interested
in a contribution towards the fund for the award is encouraged to contact

- Description of the Award:
John Butcher Award in Numerical Analysis
In honour of John C. Butcher, Professor of University of Auckland,
who attained distinguished works in numerical analysis, a new award
has been established. It is given for the best student abstract and presentation
given at the SciCADE conference.
Eligibility:
All graduate students presenting papers at one of the biennial
Scicade conferences are eligible to be considered for this award.
Definition of student:
The International Scientific Committee (ISC) deems a person to be a
student, possibly consulting the person's advisor or supervisor.
No individual shall be eligible for the award twice.
The ISC, or their nominees, shall make the selection of the award
winner. This will be based on the scientific content of the abstract
and the lecture, and on the quality of the presentation.
The Award shall consist of a framed certificate.
In the case of SciCADE 2005, the award winner will be invited to
participate in the New Zealand Mathematics Colloquium, December 2005,
as a plenary speaker. The winner will also be presented with a copy
of "Numerical Methods for Ordinary Differential Equations" by J C
Butcher.
It is hoped that at future SciCADE conferences a monetary prize or
book voucher will be associated with the award.
- How to apply:
Those who want to apply to the Award competition are requested to
submit his/her abstract of talk in SciCADE05 as the required way,
and at the same time to e-mail to Tom Mitsui, the conference chairman,
tom.mitsui@nagoya-u.jp
expressing his/her will of joining together with the reference of
the name of his/her advisor or supervisor.

The same date of abstract submission, that is, March 15, 2005
- The awarding:
It will be carried out as the final event of the SciCADE05 conference.
